What's so cool about Malaysians, then?
- We love to talk about food. A lot.
- We always complain about the prices of pirated DVDs. "Quality not clear la, boss. Cheaper can anot?"
- We know people who specially develop Western accents when talking to an American/British/Aussie. We even do it ourselves.
- We need to shower at least once a day.
- We can name all the players from the English Premier League.
- We can't do the same for our own national football/soccer team.
- We know *exactly* why superstars like Rihanna and Beyonce will perform in Singapore AND Thailand, but not Malaysia.
- We diss our country a fair bit - especially its politicians - but suddenly become proud Malaysians upon winning the Thomas Cup. Or during that time when Lee Chong Wei made it to the Olympic finals.
- Our top 3 excuses for being late to an event: 1) On the way. 2) Traffic jam. 3) Cannot find parking.
- We have the uncanny ability to mix up to 4 different dialects/languages in one sentence.
- The minute a raindrop falls on our windscreens, we hit the accelerator. "Alamak, raining - sure traffic jam one. Better drive faster."
- The mamak stall is still the place to go to for EPL matches and other major sporting events on TV. Even if we have cable (Astro) in our own comfy homes.
- We conveniently alter our accents and language styles to suit the race of the person we're talking to.
- We have 6 meals a day. Breakfast, mid-morning tea, lunch, afternoon tea, dinner, supper. Don't even get us started on the snacks - pisang goreng, muruku, keropok...
- Two words: Ramly Burgers.
- The word "tah pau" isn't limited to just kopitiams. Or the Chinese.
- We complain about petrol price and tollgate increases - even by 10 sen. But we have no complaints about paying RM10+ for a cup of expensive caramel macchiato everyday. Or something of the sort.
- We don't use "la" in the same way Spaniards and French do. La/lah is a liberally-used suffix we pepper all our sentences with. Of course lah.
- If government service is slow, we blame the Malays.
- If we pay RM 5 for something that costs 50 sen, we blame the Chinese.
- If buildings start to go faulty, we blame the Indians.
- "What", to us, does not necessarily have to be at the start of a sentence. Malaysian grammar very funny wat.
- We always feel like we need to start with the most expensive food groups at a buffet. Salad, drinks etc are just a waste of precious stomach space.
- We save and re-use old wrapping paper.
- We know of at least 10 ways to cook Maggi Mee. *Excluding* your usual boil + add seasoning fare.
- Our favourite "layered" food isn't layer cake. It's that pink kueh lapis. And we've tried (at least once) to eat it by peeling each layer off at a time.
- We grew up hearing the "Don't you know kids are starving in Africa/Somalia/China/Ethiopia/etc" nag when we didn't finish our dinner.
- We use toilet paper as a cheap Kleenex substitute.
Despite all the cynicism...
Well what can I say?
"Malaysia Boleh!"
